To proclaim and live the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through missionary service and pastoral care, especially by evangelizing people, educating youth, and fostering Christian life in local communities, in small fraternal communities inspired by devotion to Christ’s heart.
The Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Bétharram were founded in 1832 in Bétharram, France by Saint Michael Garicoïts, a priest deeply committed to spreading the love of the Sacred Heart and serving the spiritual and educational needs of the faithful after the turmoil of the French Revolution. From its beginnings the congregation focused on evangelization, pastoral ministry, and teaching as means of renewing faith among the people and responding to the Church’s missionary call.
The institute received formal approval from the Holy See in 1877 and grew internationally, with members living in small communities in countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Over the years the Bétharramites have continued their mission of evangelization and service, adapting to local needs while maintaining their founding charism rooted in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and community life.
