Charism

To educate in the faith — forming hearts and minds in the Gospel — and to live in community with common prayer and mission, responding to the needs of the Church especially through education, parish ministry, and missionary outreach with trust in Divine Providence.

Short History

The Congregation of Holy Cross was founded in 1837 in Le Mans, France by Blessed Basil Moreau, later named Congregatio a Sancta Cruce (“Congregation of Holy Cross”), to respond to the spiritual and educational needs of post-Revolutionary France by forming priests and brothers committed to evangelization and teaching. From its beginning, Holy Cross combined community life with a mission to make “God known, loved, and served,” living out the Cross as Ave Crux, Spes Unica (“Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope”).
In subsequent decades the Holy Cross Fathers and Brothers expanded internationally, arriving in the United States in 1841, where they founded the University of Notre Dame and numerous other schools, parishes, and ministries. Today they serve in many countries on multiple continents, working in education, parish and family ministry, formation, and missions, continuing Blessed Moreau’s charism of faith, hope, and service.
