To serve the Church through priestly formation — especially the discernment, initial and ongoing formation of diocesan priests — by fostering deep spiritual life, apostolic zeal, intellectual formation, and fraternal community in seminaries and priestly formation programs.

Short History

The Sulpicians were founded in 1641–1642 in Paris, France by Father Jean‑Jacques Olier, a priest of the French School of Spirituality, who established a seminary at the Church of Saint‑Sulpice to improve the education and spiritual formation of Catholic clergy in response to the needs of the post‑Tridentine Church. The first community of priests dedicated itself to seminary education and priestly renewal, forming men for ministry with an emphasis on interior life, apostolic spirit, and pastoral skill.
Over the centuries the Society expanded internationally, establishing seminaries and priestly formation programs in Europe, North America, Africa, and other regions. In 1791, at the invitation of Bishop John Carroll, the Sulpicians arrived in the United States and founded the first Catholic seminary there in Baltimore. Today, Sulpicians continue their mission of forming priests and supporting clergy in pastoral and ongoing formation, serving the Church through seminary leadership and spiritual accompaniment.
