To glorify the Most Holy Trinity through a life of consecrated fraternity and redemptive service, especially by serving those unjustly deprived of freedom, the poor, persecuted and oppressed, embodying mercy and liberation in the spirit of Christ the Redeemer.
The Trinitarians were founded in the late 12th century by St. John de Matha with the collaboration of St. Felix of Valois, following a vision that called him to ransom Christians held captive during the Crusades era. Their Rule and mission were approved by Pope Innocent III in 1198, and from the beginning the Order combined prayerful devotion to the mystery of the Trinity with active works of mercy to free captives and serve those in need.
Over the centuries the Order spread throughout Europe and later to the Americas, Africa, and Asia, expanding its ministries beyond ransom of captives to include parish work, pastoral care, education, and social outreach in local churches. Today the Trinitarians continue their redemptive mission worldwide, living in community and witnessing Christ’s love through service to the marginalized.
