Charism

The charism of the Holy Union Sisters is centered on union — unity of heart, mind, and affection in Jesus and Mary. This charism calls them to nurture deep relationships within the congregation, in community life, and with all people they serve. Through this call to union, the sisters work to promote justice, peace, and reconciliation across cultural and social boundaries, especially among the marginalized and oppressed. Their spirituality invites them to see the presence of God in all creation and to live with simplicity, charity, obedience, and contemplative awareness in mission.

Short History

The Holy Union Sisters trace their beginnings to Douai, France in the 1820s, when four devout women — originally dressmakers — came together in community to grow in prayer and to serve their local parish by helping the poor and instructing children. Their work drew the spiritual guidance of Abbé Jean Baptiste Debrabant, who helped them organize into a canonical congregation. In 1843, more than a hundred women professed public vows as Holy Union Sisters, and the institute quickly expanded its reach across Europe, British Isles, the Americas, and later Africa. Over time, they became known for education, social service, health care, and pastoral ministry.
