he congregation was founded in 1840 in Indiana, USA, by St. Theodora Guérin, a French Sister of Providence who led a small group of sisters from France to the American frontier. Facing poverty, illness, and cultural challenges, Mother Theodore established schools, orphanages, and social services, trusting firmly in God’s providence amid hardship. The congregation grew steadily, becoming known for its strong commitment to education, social justice, and care for the marginalized. While primarily based in the United States, the Sisters of Providence have extended their mission internationally through ministries, partnerships, and advocacy grounded in their founding spirit.
